With these reviews, I would be stunned if Widows didn’t get nods across the board, and I don’t just mean Baftas.

It’s currently got 94 on RT (54 reviews) and 86 on MC (17 reviews), with heaps of praise for direction, screenplay, editing and acting. Davis looks like a lock, Kaluuya’s at the very least close to being a lock, and Depicki could break through even though her category’s pretty competitive this year.

It’s presumably not an Oscar film in the traditional sense, which probably means it won’t be competitive for a win in too many categories, but it certainly looks like a player.

Is the point you are making that Zero Dark Thirty also got great reviews but wasn’t an across-the-board awards favourite? If so, I disagree. It was up for five Oscars and won one, not to mention a remarkable amount of recognition by other awards bodies throughout the season. In the Oscars, it would very likely have been even more of a threat if it hadn’t been the target of a smear campaign / controversy.

All in all though, I don’t quite get the comparison between these two films. They don’t have a whole lot in common.

Believe me, foolio. That wasn’t the major emphasis for them posting Zero Dark Thirty’s scores in this thread. LOL

On a different note, what a major achievement that will be if Daniel can pull off his 2nd consecutive nomination!

What was their major emphasis? Sorry, I’m genuinely clueless lol.

Crossing fingers for Kaluuya as well!

My interpretation was it was their attempt to compare “Widows” to “Zero Dark Thirty”, to diminish it’s awards chances based off similar critic scores?

    Daniel is on fire!

Widows got another 100 score, so it’s now at an 87! I can’t wait for it to get more nominations than people think. Some people have it getting zero nominations, lol.

Unless it does awfully at the box office, Widows is definitely in for Picture at this point. I remain sceptical on Davis though. Whilst most of the reviews highlight her, it’s all this “commanding presence” and “Viola Davis is always great” and “Viola Davis in a powerful role” and “Davis leads a great cast” rather than the actual acclaim of some of her competitors. Add to that this is not the type of movie that usually gets acting nominations and it’s difficult to see why she would get in ahead of others. She’s definitely #6 purely due to the reception for the film but I don’t think that will be enough to push her further.

I completely respect all opinions here, but I don’t buy for one moment that if “Widows” gets nominated for best picture, Viola is not getting in for best actress! She’s gotten some of the best reviews of her career for this film. In particular, for this being one of her bonafide, no category discrepancy lead roles. I also don’t think every critic who reviews the film has to go into extreme details to convey their thoughts on her performance. She will arguably have one of the best campaigns going into the season, one of the most respected actresses in the business and a great performance makes it’s not very difficult at all to see why she’ll be in top contention for a nomination. Obviously nothing is in stone yet. But, I maintain she’s in.

I can’t express my excitement enough about this film and finally getting to see it tonight at the gala presentation here in Chicago, at the Chicago Film Fest! Viola, Steve and a number of cast members are set to attend. If I get anywhere near her, i’m going to lose my marbles. LBVS

This seems like an excuse. The critics who reviewed her competitors’ films wanted to go into detail about their performances. Why did they not desire to do so for Davis also?

My good man, if you interpret it as an excuse, I respect that completely. The performance has still been praised by critics, and many have gone into the detail in question, but we will obviously agree to disagree on that one. Not an uncommon practice on this board. I might also add, critics mainly get the buzz train going, but they aren’t award bodies, and I maintain she will hit every major award for this performance until i’m proven wrong.

I wrote an article about Davis and have some critics quotes in it. Her performance is acclaimed, more than some other contenders this year to be honest. While different categories, I found more for Davis than I did for Regina King, who is considered a lock to be nominated and is our odds-on favorite to win. Besides, Davis can act and everyone knows that. She will also work the campaign trail, which helps, like it did for Allison Janney.
